Secure POP3 Port 995

Trying to setup secure POP3 on our front end exchange 2000 server (SP3 and
latest patches applied).

We have a certificate setup on the machine, way back when we got OWA
working, which is working fine.

Connecting to the machine and collecting mail through the front end using
port 110 insecurely works fine but when trying SSL through port 995 the
client won't connect. I have checked the firewall logs and the connection is
allowed to the front end but no activity is being shown requests happening
between the front end the back end server. When you are connecting to the
front end through POP3 insecurely you can see the connections being made to
the back end server.

Looking at the properties on Default POP3 Virtual Server through the
Exchange Manager on the front end. The options on the Access Tab are as
follows. The Certificate and Comminications tabs are greyed out, unlike on
the SMTP and http virtual services (Secure SMTP access works fine aswell).
When selecting the authentication options you can only input you default
domain everything else is greyed out and there is no option for TLS
authentication.

On the Client I have tried ticking and unticking "log on using secure
password authentication")

Error Message displayed on client (Outlook Express 6).

Any ideas.

Thanks
Richard

Is it possible to run both POP3 - port 110, and Secure POP3 (SSL-POP) - port 995 on the same exchange server? It appears that you are only able to run one or the other, but not both.

If anyone can help with this I would greatly appreciate it. I just need to know if it is indeed possible and if so, how to do it.

If I open the firewall wide, I can use pop3 with SSL connections. If I open the firewaal to just pop3 and smtp traffic it fails with this error:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: X.X.X.X Server: 'X.X.X.X, Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

What am I missing.

I get this error when trying to get my mail in Outlook Express "An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop.west.cox.net', Server: 'pop.west.cox.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C0133"  I've been using for years with no problem.  Anybody know what's up?
Thanks, Green Girl

I am having problems connecting to exchange using POP3/SSL (port 995). I
get the following error:A secure connection to the server could not be established. Account: 'Sue',
Server: 'EXCH', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number:
0x800CCC1AI did read that you need to install IIS BEFORE installing Exchange. I'm not
sure if we did that since we've had both around for quite a long time. If
we didn't, would I have been able to see the POP3 protocol in Key Manager?
I installed the certificate in Key Manager and it doesn't show any problems
there.Any suggestions?? I could really use some help on this...Thanks in advance,
Sue

Hi

My pop3 ssl connection to exchange 5.5 mailboxes isnt working. The exchange server is NT4.

I created an OpenSSL certificate and followed the MS guide to installing SSL certificates:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;175439

In Exchange administrator the pop3 protocoal is enabled for the site and the server, with 'Basic (Clear Text) using SSL' and 'Windows NT Challenge/Repsonse using SSL' ticked.

The IIS key manager shows a key under POP3, the properties of this key shows it is not out of date, and is 'complete and usable'

Do I have to do anything in Exchange Administrator other than tick the SSL boxes in the POP3 protocol objects?

When try to connect with outlook get
'Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: '***.***.***.***', Server: '172.30.10.24', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F'

which according the the MS support site:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;ko;251097

says the SSL certificate is invalid or not installed correctly

Anyone else had experience of setting up SSL?

Kind Regards

Hi,

Here's a big one. I want to set up a secured POP3 service but I don't know anything about it. Well, I know some stuff that i read on forums, wikipedia support sites and so on.

Anyway, it's the small details/questions i need help with.

1. I heard that POP3 and OWA can't be active on the same Exchange server, something about SSL on Exchange/ISA, is that true?

2. Another thing that i read somewhere is that secured POP3 needs alot of ports open, which ports does it need actually?

3. Is there a step-by-step checklist on how to set up a secured POP3?

4. Does the certificate help me to secure the POP3 at all, or is it only on OWA?

All comments are welcomed.
Best regards,

Mario

I'm unable to receive messages in OE6. The message is: A time out occurred
while communicating with the server. Account xyz; server xyz; protocol POP3;
port 110; Secure(SSL):No; Error # 0x800CCC19. I'm awaiting response from my
antivirus provider, CA(Computer Associates). OE messages were fine until 1
week ago. I've accessed my remote mail site to delete messages prior to the
time of the initial problem. When I stop the request in OE for additional
time for my e-mail server to respond to the attempted connection, OE delivers
the same e-mail message that I've already deleted via the remote web mail
site.
Most forums seem to point to an antivirus problem, but no response yet.
Advice is appreciated.

I have an email acount with my employer, which I use without a problem
running Outlook 2003 with Windows XP SP2 and IE7, as a POP3/SMTP account. My
employer uses a certificate for the server, which is the same for the
intranet site.
Now on my new notebook I want to run Windows Vista with Office 2007 (i.e.
Outlook 2007). I have the certificate installed, and can go to the intranet
set without problems. I enter exactly the same email acount settings as
before, which include:
- 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication' / 'Use same settings
as my incoming mail server'
- 'Server Port Numbers' specified for both incoming server (POP3) and
outgoing server (SMTP).
- SSL encrypted connection for both incoming and outgoing server

But when I test the account with Outlook 2007 it gives the following messages:
"Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): Your server does not support the
connection encryption type you have specified. Try changing the encryption
method. Contact your mail server administrator or Internet service provider
(ISP) for additional assistance."
and
"Send test e-mail message: Your server does not support the connection
encryption type you have specified. Try changing the encryption method.
Contact your mail server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for
additional assistance."

If I run Outlook 2007 with logging enabled it shows the following:
2007.07.20 15:36:10 xxx@xxx.com: UploadItems: 0 messages to send
2007.07.20 15:36:10 xxx@xxx.com: Synch operation completed

2007.07.20 15:36:10 xxx@xxx.com: Synch operation completed

I also tried using the Vista Windows Mail, and it gives me the following
error:
"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'xxx', Server: 'aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd', Protocol: POP3, Port:

The strange thing is that I can get it to work with the mail-monitor gadget
that is part of True Launch Bar (http://www.truelaunchbar.com/), still
running Windows Vista.

I have tried changing some advanced IE7 settings regarding encryption, tried
enabling disabling Windows Firewall etc. but nothing helps.

(I have changed the email-address and ip-address, for privacy reasons).

Hope someone can help me.
Kind regards

I am just tired of trying to fix it, can I uninstall office 2007....outlook

addy rather than a pop3...thanks alot for ant help.....Thomas

Outlook and outlook express

Help;
Desparately seeking help;
I cannot send out messages using pop3/smtp.
I have a paid account. (imtiaza@msn.com).
I can configure HHTP based account to send out.
I have tried using outlook express and outlook but both do not work.
OutlookExpress is 6 and Outlook is 2003.
AntiVirus is AVG and email scanning is disabled. No other virus software in
installed.
My work depends upon being to able to send out and keep a local copy in
local folders.
I have called tech support and support people have not been able to help.

incoming server; pop3.live.com
out going server: smtp.live.com
smtp port: 25 -SSL enabled
pop3 port: 995 - SSL enabled

Incoming-Logon using secure password; not checked
Outgoing- My server requires authentication; checked;
(settings- use same settings as incoming)

I am using http and pop3 on the same machine.
I have also installed msn explorer and logged in and then tried to send
using pop3.

I have tried on xp and windows2000 but no avail.

I have also tried every combination of settings (SSL,password authentication
etc)

Nothing can make outlook express and outlook send messages.

Please help.

Thank you in advance for any responses to this....

I have Outlook 2003 with SP3 running on Windows XP with SP2.

I recently setup my Outlook to run email with Google's POP3 Gmail.
According to Gmail, the setting should have POP3 set to:

-POP3 Port 995 with SSL
-SMTP Port 465 with SSL

I did this and everything works GREAT!

However, after a little while (sometimes minutes, sometimes days), my email
stops working with the SMTP and I get the message that my ISP does not
support SSL Encrypted SMTP. This is strange because it WAS working fine.

After some research, I discovered that the Outlook program spontaneously was
resetting the SMTP port to port 25!

I tried to change it back to port 465, but it didn't work. I looked online
and there was a suggestion to delete that email account and recreate it. I
did this and it worked fine....UNTIL Outlook reset the port spontaneously to
port 25 again!!!

Why does outlook keep resetting the SMTP port to port 25 for this email
account?

I have Norton Internet Security version 15.5.0.23 (current) running. I
can't imagine NIS to be doing this, but I have no idea?

Greetings to all,

I am configuring my Exchange 2003 box to accept TLS/SSL communications. I
have already configured ( thanks to someone's reply here at the groups ) a
second SMTP Virtual Server specifically for secure SMTP on port 26, which
will then forward to the "normal" SMTP Virtual Server.

First, I tested without SSL, and everything works smooth: I use a Outlook
2003 client on the internet side, and I am able to send and receive email.
Then, I turn on SSL on POP3 ( port 995 ) and after configuring the client to
connect using SSL, it also receives email from that one.

Now, when I try using secure SMTP, by setting the property "Require secure
channel" and "Require 128-bit encryption", I am unable to connect to the SMTP
server to send email. Relay is being authorized for validated users, and I
even tried allowing relay for everyone !

The funny thing comes now: I tried using Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.2 client,
and set up the options there - I selected for POP3 "Use secure connection
(SSL)" and I selected for SMTP "Use secure connection - TLS, if available".
Guess what ? It works !

Now... Is there I problem with using port 26 for Outlook clients? I read
that used to happen in much older version of Outlook, but not anymore. I even
tried using port 465, which should be standard for SSL SMTP.
Is there a way to tell Exchange 2003 not to use TLS, and use SSL instead ?
Because when I try using Thunderbird with option "Use SSL" instead of "Use
TLS if available", it doesn't connect, so I'm pretty sure the server must be
using TLS.

If anyone has an idea, can you please reply? I have been around this issue
for some time, and with your help, I have already advanced quite a bit, but
there is still just this thing to get it to work.

Many thanks, sincerily,

- Rodrigo Monteiro

Dear Forum users I have the following strange problem. I have Exchange 2000 SP3 on a Windows 2000 Server SP4 with the latest updates.

Starting from yesterday Exchange is not working properly. Client connecting with Outlook 2003 using MAPI protocol are working ok (send, receive ok both for intra-domain and external mail). Clients connecting with Outlook express with POP3 protocol are unable to access the server. The error they get is

quote:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible cause include server problems, network problems.... Protocol POP3, Port: 995, Secure SSL: Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

I've consulted the server Event Viewer and I get a lot of errors: under Application Log section I get

quote:

Event ID: 1051
Source: POP3SVC
Unexpected error condition: call to function CEncryptCtx::CheckServerCert() resulted in error code 0x800cc801.

Any kind of help would be REALLY appreciated. I have no idea of what to do.

Thanks

Alessandro

Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D

and the second message is as follows --

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Home', Server:
'pop.sky.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error:
10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Can anyone help please!!!!!!!!!!!
