connection died. (#4.4.2)

I have a vendor that has been emailing me for years.  Last month he would receive the following NDR;

I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.
:
Connected to 64.122.92.178 but connection died. (#4.4.2)
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.

This has happened to a couple of domains that try and send an email.  I searched the web and was not able to find much out on 4.4.2 error.  Can anyone help?

Exchange 2007 SP1 all updates, after a reboot it's been showing serious performance problems, clients complain about bounced mails with "Connected to xxx.yyy.zzz.eee but connection died. (#4.4.2)" error

so i did a manual telnet to port 25(and via LAN too) and all goes well until the "RCPT TO:" command, after that it took a full minute to answer OK!

the scenario is 2 mailbox servers(not replicating ATM due to other problems) and both of them has the Hub server but only one is receiving SMTP at the moment.
what can i do?, server load hasn't changed at all!

Hello Experts;

Last week we had a power outage for over 4 hours, which downed our servers and firewall.  I had to re-set the firewall to an original configuration.  Since then, a couple of people have informed me that some email is not coming through.  I am sure that 90% of email is making it through, but 10% is not.
The senders that are geting NDR messages, are getting the following;

Connected to 64.122.XXX.XXX but connection died. (#4.4.2)

I am not sure if this is because of the firewall or what.  Nothing has changed on the server.

Thanks again for any help offered.

Hello,
I have very strange issue with exchange 2003SP2 legacy mail server.. Users who use hand held device (IPhone, Blackberry) to send e-mail from public e-mail services (yahoo, gmail) gets a rejection notification usually 1 or 2 days after the message has been sent.
For example ,  hand held users sending  e-mails to username@MyDomain.com , usually get the following error..
:
Connected to xx.xx.xx.xxx but connection died. Possible duplicate! (#4.4.2)
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.
Regular e-mails from both domain gets delivered without issue..

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

My environment is:Exchange 2007 without SP1,Windows 2003 R2 SP2

I have no problem in company each other.but shown the following error message in QUEUE when we sent mail to domain:@cn.ibm.com.
:451 4.4.0 Primary target IP address responded with:"421 4.4.2 Connection dropped." Attempted failover to alternate host, but that did not succedd.Either there are no alternate hosts.or delivery failed to all alternate hosts." or "...421 4.4.1 Connection timed out..."

Hi,

One of our users tried to sent a few e-mails to his personnal mailbox (xxx@mac.com) and reports us failure for all those mail. I tried too to another mac.com address and get the same error on the edge serveur : 4.4.2 connection dropped.
We have 2 mailbox server in cluster, then 2 transport hub, then 2 edge server, all in Exchange 2007 sp1.
No problem reported with other domain.

I tried to send an e-mail manually from the edge server (telnet smtp-mx1.mac.com 25) with success.

Thanks for any help as i don't see where the problem come from...

Hello
I am currently running two Exchange 2007 servers running on SBS2008 at two different companies on two totally different domains.  Both servers are running ForeFront Security for Exchange.
My Current issue is that when sending an attachment greater then 1MB from SBS2008 server A to SBS2008 Server B. The email gets stuck in the queue and generates a 421 4.4.2 connection dropped error. But when I send a email from Server B to Server A everything works.

I have also tried disabling forefront to see if that was causing me grief but that was not the issue.
I looked into the SMTP logs from both send and receive connector and it seems to be stuck after the BDAT command is issued. Below are my smtp logs.
I have also tried TELNETTing into the other server and everything worked correctly.
I am stump as to where I should go to diagnose the issue next? has anyone encounter an issue similar to this?

Hello to all,
I'm experiencing a big problem in sending email to some domains. The messages remains in queue too long and eventually i receive an NDR but generally these messages are sent after about 1 hour and in queue manager i've a lot of entry like this:
"451 4.4.0 Primary target IP address responded with: "421 4.4.2 Connection dropped." Attempted failover to alternate host, but that did not succeed. Either there are no alternate hosts, or delivery failed to all alternate hosts.".
Searching the web i've found a lot of "solutions" regarding certificate or DNS issues but i can't find a solution for my case.
I'm not sure if is  interesting but on the ISA server monitoring i've a lot of SMTP errors (???) like this:
0x80074e20 FWX_E_GRACEFUL_SHUTDOWN  0x0 0x0 Firewall -
The very very strange situation is that this errors are intermittent... 2 days ago i had the same problem.. yesterday all works fine and today i've 400 messages in queue!!!

Any help will be apreciated

Hi,
I have Exchange Server 2007 with Windows Server 2008 but I face Issue when i sending mail on few domins get error " 451.4.4.0 Primary target IP address responded with: "421.4.4.2 Connection dropped." Attempted failover to alternate host, but that did not scucced. Either there are no alternative hosts, or delivery failed to all alternate hosts." Mails are normaly delivered on other domains but i also face this issue continuasly some domains. I request to you please help me on this issue.

Thanks
Sharad

Dear All,

I have a problem when I sending e-mail.

Queue Last Error

451.4.4.0 Primary target Ip address responded with "421.4.4.2 Connection dropped due to SocketError "Attempted failover to alternate host, but taht did not succeed. Either there are no alternate hosts, or delivery failed to all alternate hosts.

and I receive some e-mail error.

Delivery is delayed to these
recipients or groups:

user@domain.com.tr

RE

:

This message hasn't been delivered yet. Delivery will continue to be
attempted.

The server will keep trying to deliver this message for the next 1 days, 19
hours and 46 minutes. You'll be notified if the message can't be delivered by
that time.

(i know a little english sorry)

I have been troubleshooting this issue long enough that it makes me want to take a gallon of gas and a match to my Exchange server.

I have 8 domains that I cannot send email to. When I view the queue viewer I show six of the domains returning "451 4.4.0 Primary target IP address responded with: 421 4.4.2 Connection dropped. Attempted failover to alternate host, but that did not succeed. Either there are no alternate hosts, or delivery failed to all alternate hosts."

Another one of the queued messages says "451 4.4.0 Primary target IP address responded with: 421 Refused. Your reverse DNS entry does not resolve. Attempted fail over to alternate host blah, blah, blah"

We use a hosted Barracuda solution but at some point in the past we were being hammered with spam that was being sent via direct smtp transactions to our IP which bypassed our hosted Barracuda. So we put a firewall rule in place to only accept smtp from the IP address of our hosted Barracuda. Spam issue resolved but I was beginning to wonder if this was contributing to some of our problems. Since we were limiting smtp I could not even telnet into my server for testing. So I have removed the smtp limiter rule from my firewall.

I have verified without any doubt at all that my PRT record is correct. I have successfully connected via telnet session from multiple locations. I have run many, many, many tests on mxtoolbox.com and everything comes back showing that PTR is correct and there are no issues.

I ran the mailflow troubleshooter to collect some more data. One of the domains that I cannot deliver to shows the following mail acceptance failure: "Remote server mailfilter.onlymyemail.com failed the mail acceptance test. RCPT TO command: Respond = 550 mydomain.org is not filtered/routed by this server". Another one of the domains that I cannot send to shows this mail acceptance failure: "Remote server mail.othercompany.org failed the mail acceptance test. RCPT TO command: Respond = 553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)". The last is the one I see most often in the mail flow troubleshooter.

What could I be missing? Any help would be appreciated, I'm ready to starting pulling my hair out over this issue.

Hi

I have allso tryed to post this message in Connectivety group, but no
replys... better luck here?

I have an Exchange 2007 server with all the patches and SP. It’s a
single domain, and the server (win 2003 sp2) is also configured as a
DC. (jupp, got only on server)

We have just moved our server to a new location, and also got a new
internet provider. So we had to change the SMTP connector :)

Before the physical transfer of the server, all of our Distribution
groups where working fine. After the move, they are not…. Well…. Some
of the e-mails in a group will go out, but most of them are not. They
reside in the queue and the status is set to retry.

We also get an error in the queue: “Error 451 4.4.0 Primary target IP
address responded with: ”421 4.4.2 Connection dropped””

Why is this happening?

I have tried to set an other internet providers smtp, but with no
help.
After a while we get a NDR with the e-mails that haven’t gone out….

Hello Gurus,

We have co-existence of Exchange 2007 & Exchange 2010 , we have moved 50% of users into Exchange 2010, Our Hub 2010 is communicating to Edge 2007 to deliver to outside mails (eg : gmail ,yahoo ).

But the e-mail Queue stuck in Hub 2010 , the connections are dropped to Edge 2007 , unable to submit the messages from Hub2010 to Edge 2007 on time, mails delivering very late.

All the required ports are opened.

In Queue viewer  the following error appeared for some of the messages.

Last Error: 421 4.4.2 Connection dropped due to ConnectionReset

Following are errors generated in HUB 2010.

Regards, Amjuu-Anu ..

I have this odd problem.  Inbound and outbound email works great except a few problem domains.  When sending email from our network to two particular domains they give me 451 4.4.0 Primary target IP address responded with: "421 4.2.1 Unable to connect."  Attempted failover to alternate host, but that did not succeed.  Either there are no alternate hosts or, delivery failed to all alternate hosts.

And after a few days, our sending user gets a failed delivery message.  I tested using Gmail, and it seems to work fine to the same addresses/domains.

The two problem domains are: spectrumse.com & environcon.com

Both of which I can telnet to the smtp server from my CAS/HUB.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dear Sir,

Please I have a question regarding the email flow through Exchange
Server 2007.
I have found many emails in my queue with this error message:
[Last Error: 421 4.4.2 Connection dropped]
The email stayed in queue and didn't send to the receipient address...

Please any help?
Thank you

Hi everybody,

I have an anti-spam appliance that can NOT deliver mails greater than ~5MB to the exchange server, I always receive a "DSN=4.4.2 connection lost while sending message body".

The appliance and the exchange are configure to accept mails until 20MB.

The help from Microsft forums is... well there is no helpful comments about this message.

Exchange 2003 SP2, Windows server 2003 SP2.

I think there could be any problem during the connection between the appliance and the exchange SMTP and it get closed with big mails for some unknown issue for me.

Any ideas will be wellcome!

Thank you,

I am having a continuing problem with mail being send from one outside user
from a different domain (that I don't look after) to a user in my domain and
is failing at my mail server. Although, I don't recieve any messages about it
failing and my mail logs don't say anything of the sort, but the external
user after a few day gets a message that looks like this:

This is the mail delivery agent at messagelabs.com.
I was not able to deliver your message to the following addresses.

user@mydomain>:
Connected to but connection died. (#4.4.2) Despite
repeated attempts, this message could not be delivered. i do not use messagelabs to scan the mail, but the sender does
At first I thought it must have been a problem with them, but they say that
the message was sent to my server from thier relay and thats where the error
stopped.

I can see the connection attempt if i go into the prtocol - smtp - session
this connection sits the for about 400 seconds in the meantime other mail
servers are delivering mail throught the same virtual server, their
connection is for about 64 secs to 120, the mail is then delivered. The
connection from message labs eventuallly dissapears, no mail delivered.

Messagelabs log shows the following:
2005-01-07 15:49:28.486735500 starting delivery 50451: msg 588050 to
remote user@mydomain
2005-01-07 15:49:28.486744500 status: local 0/10 remote 5/220
2005-01-07 15:49:29.161581500 status: local 0/10 remote 3/220

Connected_to__but_connection_died._(#4. 4.2)/ So it is connecting, but the connection is dropping. The message that is
sent (multiple times) only has a few lines... 200 characters tops. We recieve
mail from every other host fine with no problems. The problem only occurs
with a couple of users

my relay is set to allow only from the below address 129.168.16.2. 127.0.0.1
authenticated users is not ticked

Any assistance would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks

Hello All,

Having an issue with some mail getting stuck in the Queue, staying in Retry status... this is only happening for a handful of recipient domains (but the same domains). We have one Exchange 2003 server which I administer; I have only just noticed this happening and I can't think of anything that has changed on the server.

I am receiving the following NDR:
someone@example.com on date and time
Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified. Please retry or contact your administrator.
(server.contoso.com #4.4.7)

I have checked the MSFT KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329636 and all my setting appear correct (the article is for EX2000 but similar) - PS. We use DNS

I have also received this NDR:
This is the mail delivery agent at messagelabs.com.
I was not able to deliver your message to the following addresses.

:
Connected to x.x.x.x but connection died. (#4.4.2)

Despite repeated attempts, this message could not be delivered.

I can't figure out what maybe happening – can some please shed some light on this problem?

Many thanks,
Tarran

I can no longer sync with my new Verizon PocketPC/SmartPhone with Windows
Mobile 5.0 to my new Dell notebook with WindowsXP Professional SP2.

It connects & then consistently gives me this Error when starting to
synchronize:

OUTLOOK.EXE - Application Error
The Instruction at "0x77d49dda" referenced memory at "0x35f0db0".
The memory could not be read.

When I click OK or Debug, it terminantes the ActiveSync & it's window.

This first occured with Active Sync 4.0, so I upgraded to 4.2 & still get
the error. I deleted & reset all the connections, as well as tried Repair &
Reinstall twice.

During a failed sync, it also crashes my Outlook 2003.

I can't find any info on the Internet support forums on this.

Please HELP!

We just moved one of our clients to a new office with qwest as ISP. At the old location with a different ISP they had no issues recieving emails. At the new location some of their clients are not able to send them email. We are seeing the following errors on bounce back emails that their clients are forwarding to me.
"451 4.4.1 timeout writing message to" and "Connected to (our exchange server ip address) but connection died. (#4.4.2)".
I can telnet to the exchange server on port 25 just fine. Reverse dns and mx record are correct. No evidence of their internet connection dropping.
Any ideas on this one? Gmail and yahoo senders appear to work just fine.

Their server is sbs 2003 with service packed exchange.

Hi all,

I've got a tricky situation. I have am advising a client to move from Novell SBS 4.2 with Groupwise to MS SBS 2003 with Exchange.
Horray I hear you all say.
But there's a catch 0 they only have the one Server which will obviously be blown away during the MS SBS 2003 installation.
General files are not a problem as they will be backed up.

But how do I migrate their Groupwise?

I've never down the groupwise to exchagne thing before so am naive.

However some points: there are only 7 users and the mailboxes won't be huge.
Is it possible to simply use the Exchange Migration tool on a workstation to migrate the Groupwise to .PST files?
Then after the MS SBS 2003 and Exchange install are completed, suck in the PST's to Exchange?

It's always a challenge convincing old Novell people to move on and I'd hate for Groupwise to upset the applecart.
Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

When syncing Outlook 2003 to Windows Mobile 5.0 (Motorola Q PDA) using
Microsoft Activesync 4.2 all of my contact folders do not sync--only the
default "Contact" folder syncs.

I manage my contacts using multiple contact folders which are sub folders of
the default Contact folder. I do not use the default folder.

Is there a work around or a software add-on to facilate this problem? All I
could find is Pocket Contact Synchronizer 1.2 but it appears to be only for
Outlook 2000 and 2002.

Thanks very much,

Clarence

I just bought a PPC-6700 phone and it comes with active synch 4.2

It was out of the box simple and easy to use. HOWEVER, there are some
'bugs' in the resulting data.

Some of the dates on the calendar are off by one day. They appear on the
PDA phone, one day earlier than the calendar in Outlook 2003. The best I can
tell, it is only 'reoccuring dates' such as holidays or events that I added
that occur ever Tuesday for a month etc.

Without being able to fix this, it makes my calendar to unreliable and
therefore I can not depend on it while I am away from my desk.

I have checked the time zones on both devices and they appear to be the same.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
JWB

with my Treo 750wx. Everything worked just like it should.
